From 27 March through 10 July 2022, the San Domenico Museums will be hosting the great exhibition Maddalena. Il mistero e l’immagine. Over 200 masterpieces, from the 3rd century A.D. to the 20th century, investigating the unresolved mystery of and eternal fascination with Mary of Magdalene. The faith and destiny of the first Christians and early Christian communities somehow rests on the word of this woman of infinite facets.

The exhibition

Fascinating and intriguing, Mary Magdalene is an emblematic figure emerging from the depths of our history. Over the centuries, her complexity and contrasts have inspired artists, giving rise to numerous masterpieces: hundreds of works from the worlds of art, literature, and cinema have been dedicated to her.

The great exhibition in Forlì aims to explore the extraordinary nature of this woman through some of the most precious and fascinating works of art of all times, from ancient times to the 20th century. Perugino, Titian, Tintoretto, Canova, Hayez, Delacroix, Chagall, De Chirico, and Bill Viola are just some of the many artists whose works of art are on display in this exhibition.

Twelve sections tell visitors about the aesthetics of pain in ancient art; the shaping of iconographic models in the Middle Ages; the anthropological breakthrough from Giotto to the late Gothic period; humanistic perspective between penitence, hagiography, and portraits; 16th century formal tension and 17th century sensuality, neoclassical revival, the religious 19th century and Symbolist restlessness up to the 20th century, which, in Mary Magdalene, has revamped the sense of the mystery of human life.

Conceived and organised by the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì, in collaboration with the Municipality of Forlì and the Musei San Domenico, the exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, Fernando Mazzocca, and Paola Refice. The prestigious scientific committee is chaired by Antonio Paolucci. The General Director is Gianfranco Brunelli. The exhibition, curated by Wilmotte et Associés of Paris and Lucchi & Biserni of Forlì, is held in the Church of San Giacomo and in the spacious rooms that used to host the library of the Convento (Monastery) di San Domenico.
