The Macchiaioli

3 Feb – 14 Giu 2026

A major retrospective dedicated to the Macchiaioli traces, through more than ninety masterpieces, one of the most revolutionary experiences of nineteenth-century Italian art. The exhibition offers a new and in-depth critical interpretation of the movement, highlighting its innovative value, its strong connection with the Risorgimento, and its drive toward a form of painting grounded in truth.

The exhibition

Curated by Francesca Dini, Elisabetta Matteucci, and Fernando Mazzocca, the exhibition stands as one of the most important projects devoted to the Macchiaioli in recent decades. Structured into nine sections, the itinerary reconstructs the brief yet intense experience of a group of painters who were able to interpret the cultural and political demands of their time, combining Risorgimento ideals, positivist thought, and a renewed relationship with reality.

The project, realized with the contribution of leading Italian museum institutions and major private collections, offers a unique opportunity for reflection on and appreciation of a fundamental chapter in the history of Italian art.
