La commedia dalla creazione alla ricreazione. Con gli occhi di Dante. L’Italia artistica nell’età della Commedia

26 Mar – 25 Giu 2022

The exhibition Con gli occhi di Dante. L’Italia artistica nell’età della Commedia (With Dante’s Eyes. Artistic Italy in the Age of the Comedy) is held under the La commedia dalla creazione alla ricreazione (The Comedy from Creation to Recreation) programme. It features the second part of the Trittico dell’Ingegno Italiano 2019 – 2021, which the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei dedicated to the anniversaries of Leonardo, Raphael, and Dante.

The exhibition investigates the relationship between Dante and the visual culture of his time, presenting not only works of art and artistic items, but also everyday objects, to which Dante  – also known as the Supreme Poet  –  mentioned or alluded to in his works, particularly in the Commedia.

The Commedia dalla creazione alla ricreazione also features the docufilm Le vie di Dante. L’Italia artistica al tempo della Commedia (Dante’s Routes. Artistic Italy at the time of the Comedy) and the exhibition La ricezione della Commedia dai manoscritti ai media (The Reception of the Comedy from Manuscripts to the Media), curated by Roberto Antonelli, Ebe Antetomaso, Silvia De Santis, Marco Guardo, and Luca Serianni, and hosted at the Palazzo Corsini on the same dates.

The exhibition

Con gli occhi di Dante – together with the exhibition La ricezione della Commedia dai manoscritti ai media and the docufilm Le vie di Dante. L’Italia artistica al tempo della Commedia  is part of the events that started on 25 March 2022, in conclusion of the celebrations organized by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei on the 700 years since the death of the Supreme Poet. Civita Mostre e Musei have been appointed with the creative design and layout of the exhibition, which aims to take visitors on a virtual journey through the art that was familiar to Dante, and referred to in his works, not only in Dante’s great poem, but also in his earlier work, the Vita nuova. Reproductions of different artefacts and works are on display at the Palazzina dell’Auditorio in the Villa Farnesina compound, for which different techniques were used that struck the poet’s imagination: from the three-headed Satan in the fresco removed from the Bishop’s Chapel in Treviso, to the Madonna and Child of Castelfiorentino  – likely to be the result of a collaboration between Cimabue and Giotto, and exemplifying the transition between two styles of painting that Dante had clearly in mind – or even wooden and marble sculptures referred to in his works.

Alongside the most famous works of art, the exhibition also presents other less known works to the general public. Some of them have been specially restored for the occasion, such as the female marble head by Nicola Pisano from the Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana in Siena, or the impressive illuminated Antiphonary from the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo in Pisa.

The exhibitions included in the programme La commedia dalla creazione alla ricreazione (The Comedy from Creation to Recreation) enjoy the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic, the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, of the Municipality of Rome, and of the National Committee for the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death.
